DAY TWO: HOUSE COMMITTEE ON SAFETY STANDARDS AND REGULATIONS CONTINUE SPOT ASSESSMENT IN RIVERS STATE

The House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, chaired by Rt. Hon. David Idris Zacharias, continue her spot assessment tour in Rivers State.

The assessment commenced with a visit to Weatherford Nigeria, followed by inspections at Halliburton Nigeria, Schlumberger Nigeria, and Berhauze Servicing Company. On the second day of the tour, the members visited Shell property and Development Companies, Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Limited, Integrated Logistics Company of Nigeria (Intel Nigeria) and Hamilton Technology limited marking the a continua tour aimed at addressing critical safety concerns in the region.

During the tour, the committee inspected the companies’ safety policies, employee welfare practices, emergency preparedness, and compliance with national and international safety regulations. Rt. Hon. Zacharias emphasized the importance of enforcing safety standards, noting that these inspections are part of a significant strategy to improve workplace safety, reduce accidents, and ensure a safe working environment for all employees.

The committee interacted with management teams and safety officers at each site, offering insights and recommendations on areas requiring improvement.

The findings from this tour will form the basis for a detailed report to be presented to the House of Representatives in due course. The report will signify areas where safety standards need to be reinforced and propose policy adjustments or legislation to ensure stricter compliance which is expected to bolster confidence in the safety culture of the oil and gas sector while fostering a more secure and sustainable industrial environment in Rivers State and beyond.

The committee reiterated its commitment to carrying out more of such assessments in other regions to ensure the enforcement of safety regulations nationwide.
