HOUSE COMMITTEE ON SAFETY STANDARDS AND REGULATIONS EMBARKS ON SPOT ASSESSMENT IN RIVERS STATE

The Member representing Idah Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, Rt. Hon. David Idris Zacharias, led other members of the committee to embarked on an spot assessment in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, today.

The visit, which involved a series of on-the-spot assessments, began with inspections at Weatherford Company, Halliburton Nigeria, Schlumberger Nigeria and Berhauze Servicing Company.

During the inspections, the committee examined various aspects of workplace safety, including adherence to national and international safety standards, provision of personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency response systems, and employee training programs on hazard prevention.

Additionally, the team reviewed environmental safety measures to ensure that operations align with sustainable practices and do not pose risks to surrounding communities.

During the visit, Rt. Hon. Zacharias emphasized the importance of corporate responsibility in maintaining safety and environmental standards. He stated, “Our primary responsibility as a committee is to ensure that all companies operating within Nigeria comply with safety regulations to protect both their employees and the environment. Negligence in this area can lead to dire consequences, and we are committed to enforcing compliance.”

The committee pledged to work collaboratively with stakeholders to address gaps and improve safety compliance across industries and the committee is expected to present its findings and recommendations to the House in due course, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote a safe and sustainable industrial environment in Nigeria.
