IGALA WOMEN: HISTORY BECKONS
By ONOJA J. OKPANACHI
As a people, we have come a long way, enduring internal crises, external aggressions, wars, and even economic downturns. Our history is rich with records of exploits and victories that inspire hope for a brighter future. Reflecting on our past reminds us of the possibilities that lie ahead, even in the face of present challenges.
Beyond revisiting our history, it is crucial to examine the fundamental roles played by Igala women. At every critical juncture in our history, particularly during moments of despair, our women have consistently turned the tides. They have led us in directions that resulted in triumphs, many of which were pivotal to the survival of the Igala nation. Without their contributions, we might not have remained a united people; instead, we could have been scattered, remembered only as a strong nation that once ruled along the Niger River.
The continued existence of the Igala nation is owed to many heroines who sacrificially stepped forward when all seemed lost. Given the remarkable leadership shown by great Igala women in the past, it would be unjust to marginalize them at this critical juncture. History calls upon us to honor the lessons of our past and allow our women to step into leadership roles once again.
Moreover, history is calling on Igala women, both at home and abroad, to rise to the occasion and respond to the challenges of today for the love of their land. Igala women, history beckons. The nation is faltering, and it must not be said that it was during your time that we faced the worst as a people. Let the sacrificial spirit of Inikpi inspire you to act. May the heroic deeds of Omodoko stir your hearts to stand for what is right and just.
To all Igala women, especially those with academic, economic, or political influence: Rise. Remember, even when it was difficult for the King to make the ultimate sacrifice, Inikpi stepped forward and made the critical decision. Though she faced opposition from nobles, warriors, and the elite, she understood the urgency of the moment, led courageously, and restored glory, honor, and power to the land.
Arise, Igala women—now is the time.
