ECHOCHO: THE FUTURE IS TODAY

The reality is here with us, and we can feel its weight from every angle. It affects us profoundly, no matter how much we try to pretend otherwise. At the heart of these challenges lie two critical factors: leadership and clarity of purpose.

As a people, Kogi Easterners are not faring well under the current arrangements—whether at the national, state, or local government levels. This is a pivotal moment to reorganize, reprioritize, and clearly define our collective goals for the future. Failing to do so may lead to even worse outcomes in the years ahead.

Undeniably, there is a leadership challenge. But this is not due to a lack of capable individuals with the requisite knowledge, networks, or resources. Rather, it stems from a lack of clarity of purpose. Politics has become a business open to all—both the visionary and the visionless. Unfortunately, this often results in capable leaders being obstructed by those who prioritize self-interest over the common good.

This painful reality is compounded by followers who manipulate leaders into a corner with deception. Yet, the deceit invariably backfires, leading to resentment and perpetuating a vicious cycle of mistrust and dysfunction.

Another significant issue is our inability to recognize when to stop attacks and focus on the common good. Support should mean genuinely engaging in initiatives that encourage development and progress for everyone, regardless of who emerges victorious in a political race.

However, we often linger too long in destructive patterns, criticizing when we should be building and collaborating. This unhealthy behaviour leaves us disoriented when a new political cycle begins. The confusion arises because we spend too much time tearing down instead of networking and problem-solving. Reconciliations at such times are often superficial and short-lived, doing little to foster lasting unity.

Today, Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho holds the highest elective political office in Kogi East. This office is a collective asset of the people, not just the Senator’s personal achievement. Therefore, associations, groups, and individuals must focus on networking and uniting around issues that can be advanced through his position.

It is crucial to distinguish official matters from private ones. By doing so, we can fairly assess his performance as a Senator representing Kogi East. The same principle applies to all other elected representatives, including members of the House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly.

The future we seek for Kogi East begins with our actions today. Our efforts, decisions, and collaborations now will determine the rewards or consequences we experience tomorrow. Standing idly by, waiting for someone to fail so that we may rise, is a toxic mindset. Genuine efforts to support others in their success often pave the way for our own.

It is time to ARISE!
